11.- TOOLS FOR TEACHERS: COURSE ON HIDDEN MEANINGS OF FAMILIAR WORDS
TOOLS FOR
TEACHERS ANNOUNCES
a unique
advanced language workshop
Saturday,
15 September, 10:30—13:30
DISCOVERING
THE HIDDEN MEANINGS OF FAMILIAR WORDS
It may
come as a surprise for you to find that some of the commonest words in the English
language have meanings which are not presented in textbooks for basic or even
advanced level students. Materials for the foreign language learner, even at a
fairly advanced level do not, as a rule, include these meanings, which belong
to highly informal language, an area which is not deemed as a priority for
students to learn, even though it is often heard in sitcoms and soap operas.
Here is a
brain teaser for you to work out: which extremely common single word has the following meanings? (1) prison (2) buttocks (3)
dismiss/fire someone (4) stop objectionable behaviour (5) toilet/bathroom (6)
an imprecise amount of marijuana (7) a hot rod. You may think this is an exceptional case. How can one extremely common
word have so many meanings? Ask yourself the following questions, however:
We will be
examining the hidden meanings of a number of words in a playful and
lighthearted way. If you are a word lover, this workshop will be a real doozy.
This workshop will be presented by ORIEL E.
VILLAGARCIA, M.A. in Applied Linguistics,
