Dear SHARERS,

It is a great honour for Omar and I to invite you all to participate in one of the most important events in this academic year in Argentina, and of course a very dear event for both of  us : the Ninth National Congress of Teachers and Students of English to be held on 25th and 26th of July in Buenos Aires.

This Congress was born in Mendoza in 1993 under the inspiration of a young and talented teacher from Universidad Nacional de Cuyo, Rubén Scattareggi and a group of his colleagues and friends. It was held in Mendoza in 1993 and 1994, in San Juan in 1995, in Córdoba in 1996, in Salta in 1997, in Santa Fé in 1998, in Necochea in 2000, in Mendoza again in 2001, it is held in Buenos Aires this year  and it will be held in Bahía Blanca in 2004.

All through these years the Congress has, in a way, grown up to be one of the biggest teachers´meetings in our country, it has become more academic and more comprehensive but it has never lost the original freshness of a being a forum for new experiences and trends in ELT and the freshness and gaiety of a big “party” for all teachers with a very intensive social programme.

This year the Congress can pride itself on the participation of six national universities and several Institutes of Higher Education in its Academic Committee and Executive Committee. Omar will serve as president and I will serve as a member, positions for which we were elected in 2000. We are obviously in very good company: a group of distinguished and devoted ELT professionals complete the Board.

The Academic Programme includes Five Plenaries and a minimum of 30 concurrent workshops led by some of the biggest names of ELT in Argentina. There will be five slots for workshops and at each one of these occasions you will have the chance to choose out of a menu of at least 15 workshops. And believe me, it won´t be so easy to choose!

This year, concurrently with the Ninth Congress of Teachers and Students of English we will be holding the Primeras Jornadas Argentinas de Plurilingüismo y Educación in which teachers and translators of English, French, Italian and Portuguese will participate. Most of their sessions will be held in Spanish, so if you wish you only need to enrol for the Jornadas activities since there is no extra cost for this and they will be held at the same time and on the same premises as the Ninth Congress. Of course we will SHARE most of the social programme with these teachers of other languages, so most probably these events will be like Babel!

The social programme? This is surely one of the highlights of the Congress. There´s a Welcome COCKTAIL PARTY on Friday evening followed by a CONGRESS DISCO with plenty of dancing to the music of the 70´s and the 80´s, an EMPANADA PARTY ( with plenty of wine (!) and Coke) on Saturday, a musical by Celia Zubiri and her Buenos Aires Players “QUASIMODO, THE HUNCHBACK” and a tongue-in-cheek adult play “SEX; MARRIAGE AND THE ENGLISH TEACHER” by Ruben Scattareggi´s “Crack Theatre Group”. And all this at no extra cost!!!

All this is included in your ticket of $ 40 ( $45 if you enrol after 30th of June 2003).

The certificates of attendance will bear the signature and seal of each of the six universities.

The “trámites para reconocimiento de puntaje” in the province of Buenos Aires and the City of Buenos Aires are under way. There will surely be many teachers from other provinces coming, in which case we beg of you to enrol early and to advise us what province you are coming from so that we can start taking the necessary steps to have the Congress accredited in your provinces.

I hope I have not made a mess of this all. Omar has been unwell most of the week and in still in bed with the flu, so the responsibility has fallen on my shoulders to write to you and to transmit to you all how happy we are to be organizing this for all our colleagues and also for the many SHARERS in our country. And the way our little hearts beat anticipating those two glorious days we are going to spend these winter holidays: LEARNING AND SHARING THE HAPPINESS OF BEING TOGETHER.

All our love

Omar and Marina

P.S: We will be sending you the details of the Congress separately in an e-mail with the title "A Message from Omar and Maina". In a few days the Congress "Call for Papers" will be out, so start getting ready for it!
