RESEARCH FORUM

Saturday 9th July - 11:30 -12:30
Room "D"

Moderator: Claudia Bourda M.A.

Presentation 1:

Half Truths and Professionalism

Prompted by an editorial in SHARE No 146, this presentation will explore the use of ambiguous words and phrases such as trainer, experience, science tells us, research proves, among others, which are sometimes sprung on the unwary, young teacher who is thus intellectually abused and surprised in his/her good faith.
This prresentation will aim at cautioning the beginning teacher against linguistic traps that mask deceitful marketeering and urge them to exercise critical thinking.

Presenter:

Prof. Oriel Eduardo Villagarcía M.A.

(See Bio data in Round Table 1)

Presentation 2:

The use of authentic material vs. the use of simplified material in ELT.

Over recent years we have witnessed an increasing concern on the part of EFL teachers and educators with the communicative functioning of language and the use of authentic language data in their daily activities. Too exclusive a concern for authentic language can lead to a disregard of methodological principles. The aim of this presentation is to look into the notion of authenticity with reference to the teaching of EFL, and the concept of simplification as a pedagogic technique and eventually as a learning strategy.

Presenter : Prof. Ana M. Kuckiewicz

Ms Kuckiewicz   is a graduate English teacher from Instituto Nacional Superior del Profesorado Técnico de la Universidad Tecnológica Nacional, where she is currently a lecturer in Didactics II. She has attended the BA course at Universidad Nacional del Litoral, and is due to defend her final thesis, Incidence of CP in adult EFL Learning very soon. She also has a wide experience  as a primary and secondary teacher and school manager.

The presentations of both reports ( 20 minutes each) will be followed by a 20 minute question and answer period in which all members of the audience can participate.
