Book Presentation: Real, Applied Transformations from Kinder – An Applied Pilot Scheme for the Teaching of EFL in State Schools

by Lic. Myriam Abalos
Introduced by Lic. Mady Casco.

About the book:
The learning of our culture in general and the acquisition of a foreign language in particular should be memorable and meaningful experiences especially if we refer to the teaching of EFL in kindergarten.
Do all kids in our country have the same opportunities at school? In other words… Is the share fair?
Through a pilot scheme carried out in state schools in Buenos Aires city, I would like to prove that it is possible to have ‘equity and quality’ combined in all educational contexts, as all kids are born with the same learning capacities in spite of their different backgrounds.

How to incorporate Service Learning into your conversation and writing lessons

Department of English & Foreign Languages
University of St. Francis, Joliet, Illinois, USA

About the lecture:

The purpose of this presentation is to show how the foreign language class can be made more meaningful and stimulating for advanced learners when a service-learning component is incorporated to the curriculum.

This talk will explore how a course that stresses the development of the target language for a specific discipline (e.g. social work) combined with experiential/academic service learning (ASL) results in an effective pedagogy that motivates advanced students and Heritage speakers to acquire further knowledge and perfect their oral and written skills in this language. Discover how meeting real community needs and being engaged in real social work situations and interactions gives the foreign language student a sense of purpose, fulfillment, and accomplishment with their language studies, that go far beyond the credits that may be obtained for the class.
